CULTURE
Between the most important festivals / fiestas, we can mention in:

Torrevieja:

The Holy Week (Eastern)
During the Holy week there are processions and parades all over Spain, also in Torrevieja thousands of people participate in the festivals, the evening of Good Friday being specifically important.

May Fair = Feria de Mayo
At the end of May, we bring Andalusia a little closer to Torrevieja with the May Fair, when over 5 days the local people as well as visitors get together around the little traditional stands to try the fine wine and dance the typical "sevillanas". Many will be dressed in their traditional costumes. Horses and carriages are also a part of the celebration together with their more or less experienced riders.

Las Habaneras: The International Habanera and Polyphony contest.
Traditional from Torrevieja, these songs have diverse influences originating from the transport of the salt to the Island of Cuba, and are still present through a contest with international flavour, yet without loosing the folklore element. .
  Virgen del Carmen
On the 17th of July, the patron saint of fishermen and seamen is celebrated with a maritime procession.

LAS SALINAS = THE SALT LAKES
The principal industry at the South Coast of Alicante is the salt exploitation. Apart from the industry, visible in the mountains of extracted salt, the salt lakes also have their influence on nature, health and culture. First of all they form an important aspect of the landscape. The two big salt lakes of La Mata (500Has) and Torrevieja (1400Has) are declared natural parks because of their ecological interest. Bathing in the salt lakes is known to be effective against rheumatism, dermatological and heart diseases. The main cultural influence is the actual Habaneras Contest finding its origin in the songs of the seamen of Torrevieja taking the salt to Cuba.

MICROCLIMATE
Our area is the driest sector of the Iberian Peninsula. The average yearly temperature of 19ºC, 340 days of sun a year, warm winters and the high concentration of salt mentioned before, give Torrevieja and its surroundings a particularly healthy climate, recommended by international doctors.
